As we find ourselves in December, with actual building season slowing down in many regions of the US, it's the perfect time to start planning for a successful spring tiny house build. In this week’s newsletter, we will offer tips to make the best use of your planning so that when spring comes, you can get those wheels rolling on your tiny house build!

Now is the ideal moment to get ahead of the spring rush plus save with our end-of-year special.

Why Start Planning Now?

Ordering your trailer 8-12 weeks in advance ensures it's ready when you are. Don't get caught in the spring surge - act now while lead times are as low as two weeks!

Every Build Starts with the Trailer

Your tiny house journey begins with selecting the right trailer. Consider the length, width, and other vital factors to set the stage for your unique design. To learn more about what sizes may be best for you, visit the Tiny House Trailer Page + Tiny House Trailer Options + Should you build a 10ft wide Tiny House?

  • Length: Choose a trailer size that matches your tiny house's livable length. The tongue will add 4ft to the overall length of your tiny house.

  • Width: Decide between a range of widths up to 12ft.

Designing Your Tiny House

From initial planning and experimenting with floor plans to the final building preparations, every step is crucial. Utilize tools as basic as graph paper to software like Tiny Easy 3d Designer, SketchUp, and SweetHome3d to bring your vision to life or have us design a custom plan for you.

Plan for Materials

when the construction industry gets back to full speed in the spring, it can affect lead times on lots of materials. We suggest getting an early start on the following:

  • Windows: short lead times on windows can be 4-6 weeks, but at the height of spring, it can be between 12-24 weeks, depending on the brand and style. Plan early and order when you have your design complete.

  • Flooring: when shopping for flooring, you will likely come across a style that will need to be ordered. Plan to order 10-15% more than the Sq/Ft area you plan to install it.

  • Wood Siding or Interior Paneling: if you plan to use a wood species that is not native or locally stocked, you may have to order it well in advance to have it on hand for your build. Some examples can be Western red cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Redwood, Wood Shingles, or even wood products like LP smart siding.

  • Tiny House Friendly Appliances: Smaller appliances suitable for tiny houses are not usually stocked at big box retail stores, so they must be ordered. Examples of these would be 24” apartment ranges, 12” cooktops, apartment-style refrigerators, 18” dishwashers, and Composting or Incinerating Toilets.
